for the past 2.5 years, i've been working for a fairly large company in the silicon valley (over 17k employees). it's the largest company i've ever worked for and so far, it has been a wonderful experience. since this place is a tech company in the valley, i assumed people dressed more casually -- including the women. feh. week 1 was pretty surprising when i saw all these women looking very stylish and chic -- so much that their looks rivaled the women working in downtown sf! i had to upgrade my wardrobe just so that i wouldn't look like a rumpled, frumpy slacker but i could never quite look as pulled together.
fast forward 2.5 years... most of the women are still styling but i've become a bit more lax. especially with this pregnancy when i'm hesitant to spend $ on maternity work wear that i may just wear for a few months. so i've been sporting my maternity jeans and sweaters more often... i didn't think i looked frumpy or a slob that is until today.
shortly after lunch, i bumped into an asian american woman at the elevator who worked on a different floor in my building. given that we're such a large organization, it's no surprise that we didn't know each other. but what's unique about this encounter is that i immediately noticed her appearance. head to toe she looked professional, in control, and so polished. she sported a crisp white button down shirt, layered under a deep v-neck, black sweater, black slacks and slingback heels. her hair was long and perfectly coiffed. her makeup was impeccable. her statement piece? a pair of bold but stylish glasses with a modern look. the overall effect was impressive, and it made me feel self-conscious, unkempt and very frumpy even though i was wearing a similar v-neck sweater over a nice pair of dark wash trouser jeans!
bumping into her made me wonder if i should put more effort into my appearance... maybe it's time for a mini-makeover?
